Viking Access Control Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

We install and replace Viking access control boards, keypads, card readers, loop detectors, and related hardware throughout San Antonio, with installed pricing for most Viking access control jobs running $425 to $1,650 depending on the component and what it feeds into. If your gate stopped recognizing a keypad code, the keycard reader stopped beeping, or the opener ignores every input, you’ve found the right page. San Antonio owners usually find us mid-problem: a board damaged in a storm, a keypad that works intermittently, or a brand-new system that never quite communicated with the rest of the opener.

We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Viking Access, but we service their equipment every week across San Antonio and stock the common replacement boards and peripherals on our trucks.

Key Takeaways:

  • Most Viking access control work in San Antonio is done in one visit, since we carry common boards and readers aboard.
  • Written price, in full, before any work starts. No line items added at the end.
  • We carry both new-old-stock OEM and quality aftermarket options and we’ll explain the tradeoff in plain words, not sales script.
  • Your tech arrives with a name, photo, and photo ID badge. Ask to see all three at the door.
  • Call (940) 531-3336 to describe what the system is doing wrong. We quote the labor over the phone.

Which Viking Models This Applies To

Viking access control is a broad line, and the model matters far more than people expect. The E series and T series control boards share many housing dimensions but not the same firmware. The G-5, G-5 Elite, and R-6 use the same physical enclosure in many San Antonio installs, but the Elite boards accept a different antenna harness than the base G-5. Swapping one board for a “looks-right” board without checking the model tag is the single most common compatibility mistake we correct. The model tag sits on the side rail or bottom edge of the control enclosure, usually a white label with a letter and a number pressed into it. Send us a photo of that tag when you call. It saves you the cost of a second visit.

OEM versus aftermarket for Viking is more forgiving than some lines, like DoorKing or LiftMaster, where we lean OEM almost always. For Viking, the aftermarket linear actuators and antenna modules we stock have proven reliable over three and four year runs on San Antonio gates. The big exception: any board that stores credential data. We recommend OEM there, because the aftermarket boards occasionally drop programming when power blips, and a gate that forgets the HOA residents’ codes at 7 a.m. is a gate that makes you the bad guy. We carry both options. You get the choice with the price difference spelled out, in writing, before you decide.

Signs Your Viking Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad accepts codes only sometimes, usually after several presses. The keypad membrane on Viking K2 and K3 series units wears unevenly in direct south-facing sun, and Texas sun is direct on every San Antonio driveway. One or two keys read fine while others need force. We usually confirm this by having you describe which keys work consistently.
  • The reader shows a red light and never changes when a card is presented. This usually points to the antenna module or the coaxial pigtail between the board and the reader, not the card itself. Corrosion on the pigtail connector is common after two or three wet San Antonio winters, even under trim plates.
  • The gate opens fine with the wireless remote but ignores the access keypad entirely. When the onboard radio works but the wired access input does not, the failure is almost always the input terminal block on the control board, not the wiring to the keypad. We see it on boards older than five or six years in San Antonio, especially where the board box faces morning sun and the heat cycles cook the solder joints.
  • You hear a relay click but the gate motor never runs. That click is the board trying to fire the motor relay, which means the access control side is likely fine, but the relay contacts have arc damage. It is repairable on some boards and not worth repairing on others. We can diagnose that one by phone with you in about two minutes.
  • A power flicker reset your codes and now nothing accepts any input. If the board lost its credential memory after a power event, the battery backup cell on the board has died. On Viking boards the memory battery is a coin cell, and when it fails, boards that seem fine during normal power lose everything the moment the mains cut for two seconds. San Antonio thunderstorms deliver that exact scenario a few times a year.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Antonio, a Viking access control board replacement runs $425 to $1,650 installed. A keypad or card reader swap, when the board is healthy, runs $225 to $520. Antenna module replacement runs $180 to $380. A complete access system rebuild, board plus two readers plus keypad plus antenna, runs $1,850 to $3,200. The big spread is not labor. Labor for most of these jobs is $145 to $285 in our market. The spread is the component: a G-5 base board is far cheaper than an Elite, and OEM credential-storing boards carry a real premium over aftermarket boards that hold memory.

Every price includes the part, the labor to pull the dead component and install the new one, a full function test of every access input (keypad, card reader, radio remote, vehicle loop), and a walkthrough where we make you enter your own code before we leave. You get the full written price before we touch a screw. No surprise line items at the end. Every access board install carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the board or our work fails within a year, the return visit is free.

Tell me what it’s doing wrong – I’ll tell you what it costs to fix it, in writing, before we start.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely do: confirm power at the outlet or breaker, photograph the model tag, test each input (keypad, card, remote) and note which ones work and which do not, and listen for the relay click. Those four things save us time and save you money, because when you can tell us exactly which input is dead, we sometimes skip the diagnostic visit entirely and bring the right part on the first trip.

What you should not do: open the control board enclosure with power applied, re-terminate the 120V feed, or swap wire positions on a board you have not disconnected from power. The access board runs at low voltage, but the enclosure also carries mains power for the motor circuit, and the two are only a few inches apart. A slip with a screwdriver across the wrong terminals causes injury or a burnt board, and both are more expensive than our service call. If the board is older than eight years or the enclosure has been wet, call us. San Antonio humidity and lightning take a real toll on Viking boards that are not sealed well. Call (940) 531-3336 and we will walk you through what to check while you are on the phone, no charge.
