Get your free estimateLinear Access Control Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
Linear access control installation in San Antonio typically runs $340 – $690 for a complete keypad, card reader, or telephone entry system swap, including the part, wiring check, and programming. We stock Linear-compatible access control components on our trucks and can usually complete the job same day in most San Antonio neighborhoods. The way owners find out a Linear access control installation has failed is rarely dramatic: the keypad stops accepting a code that worked last week, the card reader blinks but won’t release the gate, or the telephone entry system rings with no voice on the other end.

Which Linear Models This Applies To
We install and service access control equipment across the Linear product lines most common on San Antonio gates. The APeX series, the classic AE-100/200 telephone entry units, the AK-11 digital keypads, and the RE-1 and RE-2 radio receivers are the names you’ll see most often on older residential and light commercial setups across the city. If you’re not sure what you have, look at the inside of the keypad housing or the side of the telephone entry box for a small silver label with a model number starting in AE, AK, AP, or RE. That number tells us most of what we need to know before we arrive.
On OEM versus aftermarket for Linear specifically: we prefer genuine Linear or Linear-compatible components that match the original wiring and mounting footprint. Some aftermarket keypads will work electrically but leave you with a mismatched hole pattern or a button layout that doesn’t line up with the old housing. For most San Antonio homes, the OE-spec part or a direct-fit replacement is the same price or within $30 of a universal part, and it saves you the headache of a retrofit that looks like a retrofit.

Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad accepts the code but the gate hesitates or doesn’t move. The keypad itself is often fine; the relay inside is worn or the wiring from the keypad to the gate operator has a bad connection. This is the most common call we run in Alamo Heights and Terrell Hills.
- Card reader blinks red or blue but never clicks. The reader is seeing the credential but the control board isn’t responding. Could be the reader, could be the board on the operator. We bench-test before we sell you a part.
- Telephone entry box rings the house but no audio comes through. On Linear AE-series units, the microphone or speaker connections are prone to corrosion from San Antonio humidity and temperature swings. Sometimes it’s a $40 component, not a full replacement.
- Keypad goes dead after rain or a cold snap. Water intrusion through a worn gasket is the usual story. Linear keypads are decently sealed, but ten years of Texas sun will crack any gasket.
- One code works, another stopped working randomly. Memory corruption on the control board is usually the culprit, and the fix is a new board rather than a new keypad. We’ll tell you honestly if that’s what we find.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For San Antonio, here’s what we quote, in writing, before any work begins:
- Linear-compatible keypad replacement: $180 – $320 installed, depending on whether it’s a simple AK-11 style unit or an APeX keypad with more programming.
- Card reader replacement: $240 – $420 installed, depending on the reader type and whether the existing wiring can be reused.
- Telephone entry system replacement: $540 – $690 installed, including programming of the directory and testing from the street side of the gate.
- Replacing the access control board only (inside the operator): $180 – $310 installed, when the keypad or reader tests fine and the board is the bad actor.
What drives the range: the length of the wire run, whether conduit needs repair, whether we’re matching an existing mounting footprint or cutting new holes into stone or stucco, and whether the old unit’s wiring is still sound. Every quote includes the part, labor, programming, cleanup, and a written guarantee under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair isn’t right, we come back and make it right for free. That’s in writing.

AfterDIY or Call Us?
Access control installation on a Linear gate is low voltage, so the risk of shock is minimal. The risk is in doing the job wrong and not knowing it until you leave for work and the gate won’t open. If you want to check something before calling, you can verify the keypad has power, look for obvious corrosion behind the keypad, and note whether any codes work at all. Beyond that, we’d rather you call us. The relay wiring, the programming, the board-level diagnosis: that’s where a $60 troubleshooting attempt becomes a $400 repair. Call (940) 531-3336 and describe what it’s doing. Tell me what it’s doing wrong – I’ll tell you what it costs to fix it, in writing, before we start.
FAQs
Eight to twelve years is realistic in the San Antonio climate. The two things that shorten their life here are direct sun on exposed keypads and rain driven into partially sealed enclosures. If your unit is older than ten years and acting up, replacement is usually smarter than repair.
Board-level repairs almost never make economic sense; component-level fixes sometimes do. If it’s a wiring issue or a single relay, we’ll repair it and charge you a service call plus parts. If the board is failing or the keypad housing is letting in water, replacement is the honest answer and we’ll tell you that point blank.
Most residential keypad or card reader swaps take under two hours including programming and testing. A telephone entry system replacement with directory programming usually runs three to four hours. We’ll give you a written time estimate with the quote.
We carry the most common Linear-compatible keypads, card readers, and replacement boards on our trucks. If you have an unusual model or a telephone entry unit needing a specific part, we can usually source it within two to three business days from our distributor. Call (940) 531-3336 with your model number and we’ll tell you what’s in stock before we schedule.
