Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Repair: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

Ghost Controls keypad and intercom repair in San Antonio typically runs $185 to $385 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the membrane pad, the receiver board, or the whole unit. We stock Ghost Controls-compatible keypads and call-box hardware on the truck, so most repairs happen same-day. The usual story we hear: the keypad worked fine for years, then one afternoon it stopped chirping when you pushed the buttons, or the intercom audio turned to static during a Texas thunderstorm, or the gate just ignores every code you enter.

If that sounds familiar, this page covers which Ghost Controls models we fix, what fails first, what it costs, and what to check before you call. We’re an independent San Antonio gate repair company, not affiliated with Ghost Controls, but we service their equipment regularly alongside LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and DoorKing hardware.

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls makes two main residential lineups, and the keypad and intercom parts are not interchangeable between them. The AXDP and AXDPII series use a two-piece design: the keypad face separate from a receiver board behind it. The newer TDS, HYDP, and RPD series run on a sealed single-board keypad with a different mount spacing and a different code protocol. If you buy an AXDP keypad for a TDS opener, it won’t pair, period.

Check your existing keypad’s backplate before you order anything. The model number is printed on the inside of the battery cover or molded into the housing. The quickest way to identify it is the screw pattern: AXDP keypads have four holes on a 3.25-inch center, while the newer boards use a three-screw triangular pattern. We match the OEM part when the opener is less than five years old, and we’re honest when a quality aftermarket equivalent will do the same job for less, particularly the wireless keypad models that don’t run a hardwired intercom line.

One more San Antonio-specific gotcha: our hard water and summer humidity corrode the contact pads under the rubber buttons faster than you’d expect. A keypad that looks fine from the outside often has green oxidation on the board inside. We see that almost daily on older installs in Stone Oak, Alamo Heights, and King William.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Keypad stays dark or doesn’t beep when pressed. This usually means the battery contacts have corroded or the membrane ribbon has separated from the board. On hardwired units, we check incoming voltage first; Ghost Controls keypads run on 12V DC, and anything under 10V causes intermittent dead spots.
  • Correct code triggers no response from the gate. The receiver board’s relay is the weak link here. Rattling over years of San Antonio thunderstorms and heat cycles causes the relay solder joints to crack. We can repair that board at the bench rather than replacing the whole keypad in most cases.
  • Intercom audio is scratchy, one-way, or dead. Water intrusion through the speaker grille is the top culprit in San Antonio. Our flash-flood season plus the humidity means connections oxidize fast. We usually find corroded terminal blocks behind the unit.
  • Buttons work but require multiple firm presses. The carbon pads under the rubber face wear down over years of daily use. This is a normal wear-out item, and it’s the most frequent keypad issue on Ghost Controls systems older than five years.
  • The keypad works but the gate opens or closes by itself. This is a receiver board short, and it’s the one symptom you shouldn’t ignore, because it means the open circuit is crossing. Your gate can cycle randomly until the board is replaced or isolated. Call us before that damages the motor.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A Ghost Controls keypad replacement in San Antonio typically runs $185 to $285 installed for the wireless models, and $265 to $385 when we’re replacing a hardwired keypad-and-intercom unit that requires pulling new low-voltage wire. Labor is included in those numbers, and we give you the written price before any work starts, every time.

Parts cost makes up about 60% of the range. A bare OEM keypad runs $90 to $140 depending on series, and the receiver board inside adds another $40 to $70 when it needs replacement. The labor covers the swap, re-pairing the keypad to your opener, sealing the housing against moisture, and testing every code you use. Every Ghost Controls keypad and intercom repair from us carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within a year, we come back and make it right, free.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check three things before calling: the battery, the keypad’s power LED, and whether the opener itself responds to its remote or wall button. If the opener responds to the remote but not the keypad, the keypad or its receiver is the problem, not the motor. Those checks take five minutes and they help us quote accurately over the phone.

What we don’t recommend is opening the keypad housing if it’s hardwired. Ghost Controls keypads carry 12V DC, which won’t hurt you, but the boards are static-sensitive and the ribbon cables tear easily. More than a third of our keypad repairs in San Antonio are rescuing units that were damaged by a well-meaning DIY attempt. If the keypad is surface-pitted, water-stained, or the gate opens randomly, call us at (940) 531-3336. Tell me what it’s doing wrong, we’ll tell you what it costs to fix, in writing, before we start.
