If your FAAC gate motor has quit, we stock compatible replacement motors for the most common FAAC swing and slide gate series, and most San Antonio replacements run between $1,450 and $2,900 installed, depending on the model and what else has worn with it. We can often complete the swap the same day we diagnose it, since our trucks carry the FAAC-compatible motors, capacitors, and control boards these systems fail on. You’ll know it’s the motor when the gate hums but won’t move, trips the breaker the second it’s triggered, or moves halfway and stalls – the operator still has power, but the motor itself can’t do the work anymore.

Which FAAC Models This Applies To
The FAAC lineup breaks into two families that matter for San Antonio homeowners: the swing-gate 400-series (412, 415, 422, and the older 402/770) and the slide-gate 740/741/844 series. Within those, the motor itself is usually a 24V DC unit matched to a specific operator board, and that’s the gotcha – a motor for a 412 will not talk to a 741 board, even if the mounting bolts line up. Before we quote anything, we check the model plate on the operator housing and measure the motor shaft and mounting face, because FAAC changed motor specs mid-production on more than one series. On the parts side, we install both OEM FAAC motors and quality aftermarket equivalents from suppliers we’ve vetted over years. For most 400-series swing gates in residential use, the aftermarket unit saves four to six hundred dollars and carries the same one-year part warranty we back with our own labor guarantee. On commercial slide operators, we lean OEM – the duty cycle expectations are higher, and FAAC’s own motor windings hold up better on gates cycling forty-plus times a day. We’re an independent service provider, not a FAAC affiliate, which means we can match the right part for the job instead of pushing one label.

Signs Your FAAC Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
- Hum but no movement. The motor is getting voltage but the armature can’t turn – usually a seized bearing or shorted winding. In San Antonio’s heat, we see this most often on operators without adequate shade or airflow, where the motor housing bakes all afternoon.
- Half-travel stalls. The gate starts, then dies before the limit switch. That’s classic thermal overload – the motor windings heat up mid-cycle and the thermal cutoff kills it until it cools. Replacing the motor fixes it; replacing the board first is a wasted spend.
- Tripped breaker on every trigger. A shorted or grounded winding pulls locked-rotor current instantly, and the breaker won’t tolerate it. Don’t keep resetting it – the capacitor bank can fail next, which doubles the repair bill.
- Growling or grinding from the operator housing. Gear wear at the motor-to-gearbox interface is metal-on-metal noise, and by the time you hear it, both the motor pinion and the gearbox input gear usually need attention.
- Gate drifts or won’t hold position. On FAAC swing operators with a failed brake circuit or a demagnetized DC motor, the gate loses holding torque. It’ll push open by hand even when the operator is locked.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a residential FAAC swing gate in San Antonio, a motor replacement typically lands between $1,450 and $2,200 installed. Slide operators run higher – $2,100 to $2,900 – because the motor integrates with a larger gearbox assembly and the labor window is longer. The price you get from us is the written price, before any work starts: motor, any capacitor or harness required, mounting hardware, removal of the old unit, installation, limit switch setup, and a full cycle test. If we find the gearbox or control board also needs work mid-job, the revision is a conversation with a new written price before we touch it, never a surprise line item at the end. Every motor we install carries a written one-year warranty on the part and our labor, and the whole repair is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise – if the fix fails within a year, the return visit is free.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely check: power at the outlet the operator plugs into, whether the breaker is hot or tripped, and whether the gate itself moves freely by hand (with the operator switched off). What you shouldn’t attempt: opening the operator housing. FAAC motors run on 24V DC, but the control board carries line voltage on the input side, and there’s a capacitor bank in there that holds a charge even after the unit is unplugged. We’ve seen a charged capacitor give a homeowner a hard jolt more than once. Beyond the shock risk, the mechanical alignment between the motor pinion and gearbox is shimmed to the thousandth – get it wrong and you’ll destroy the new motor’s gear within a month. If the operator is humming, tripping, or stalling, call us at (940) 531-3336. We’ll name the tech and send a photo before he arrives, and you’ll have the written price before a single tool comes out.

FAQs
We see residential FAAC motors last between 8 and 12 years in San Antonio, with the heat being the main limiter – operators mounted on unshaded west-facing columns fail noticeably earlier than shaded ones. Slide-gate motors on daily-use commercial gates often need replacement by year five or six.
Sometimes, but rarely worth it. A worn pinion gear or a failed bearing can be replaced, but once the windings short or the armature scores, rebuilding costs more than a new motor. We’ll give you the straight numbers either way before you commit.
Most residential swing-gate motor swaps are done in two to three hours on site, including limit setup and cycle testing. Slide operators run three to five hours depending on the gearbox condition.
We stock FAAC-compatible motors, capacitors, and control boards for the 400-series swing operators and 740/741 slide series on our trucks across San Antonio. If your model is a less common variant, we can usually have the exact motor in hand within two business days.
