We stock Mighty Mule-compatible keypads, intercom boards, and keypad-and-intercom combo units, and in most San Antonio neighborhoods we can have a technician out the same day you call. An installed Mighty Mule keypad or intercom repair typically runs $145 to $420 depending on whether we’re replacing just the keypad board, the intercom module, or the full weatherproof housing and both boards together. Most owners discover the failure the same way: the gate opens fine from the remote but the keypad outside the fence goes dead, or the intercom crackles and the visitor can’t hear you through the house unit. That’s the Mighty Mule weak point we see most often, and it’s usually a straightforward fix.

If you’re standing at your gate right now wondering whether it’s the keypad, the wiring, or the control board in the operator (the box that slides or swings your gate automatically), call us at (940) 531-3336 and describe what it’s doing wrong. We’ll give you a written price before any work starts, every time.
Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To
We service keypads and intercoms across the main Mighty Mule lines you’ll find installed around San Antonio: the MM series (MM260, MM360, MM371, MM571), the FM series (FM200, FM350, FM500, FM502), and the newer RB and MK series operators. The keypad compatibility gotcha to know: Mighty Mule has used two different keypad protocols over the years. The older MM and FM series use a 4-wire keypad that talks to the control board through a dedicated keypad terminal. The newer RB741 and MK series use a different communication style, and the keypads are not cross-compatible. If you buy a used keypad off a classifieds site and it’s from the wrong generation, it will light up but never actually open the gate.
How to tell what you have: open the front cover of your operator and look for a small white sticker on the control board. It’ll have an MM, FM, RB, or MK prefix followed by numbers. Text us a photo of that sticker along with a photo of your keypad, and we’ll identify the right part before we ever roll a truck.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Mighty Mule sells replacement keypads directly, and there are a handful of quality aftermarket equivalents we’ve tested on San Antonio gates and trust. For intercom boards specifically, we prefer OEM Mighty Mule parts because the audio circuitry is more consistent than what we’ve seen from aftermarket suppliers. For plain keypads, a good aftermarket unit often costs $40 to $60 less and holds up just as well in our experience. We’ll quote you both options and let you choose.
Warden Gate Repair is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Mighty Mule. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Ghost Controls, and DoorKing gate systems, so if you have a mixed setup we can handle it in one visit.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- The keypad lights up but won’t open the gate. You enter the PIN and hear a beep or see the backlight, but the gate stays put. Usually this means the keypad itself is fine but the control board isn’t receiving the signal. We check the keypad-to-board wiring first, then the board’s keypad input terminal. In San Antonio’s humidity, corrosion at those terminals is a frequent culprit.
- The keypad is completely dead, no lights, no beeps. No power reaching the keypad. Often it’s a broken or chewed wire between the keypad and the operator, especially along fence lines where rodents and weed trimmers do their work.
- The intercom audio crackles or cuts out in one direction. This one is usually the intercom module inside the operator housing. Heat is the enemy here. San Antonio summers push temperatures inside steel gate operator boxes well past what the audio capacitors in the older Mighty Mule intercom boards were built to handle.
- Visitors hear you, but you can’t hear them, or vice versa. This often points to a failing intercom board or a damaged speaker wire. It can also be as simple as a dead speaker inside the keypad housing, which we replace as a separate part.
- The keypad works intermittently, usually after rain. Water is getting into the keypad housing or the wiring conduit. Mighty Mule keypad housings have a gasket that dries out and cracks over time, especially in direct sun exposure. Once moisture gets to the board, intermittent behavior is the first sign of corrosion setting in.

Here’s the honest split. You can safely check a few things yourself: make sure the keypad’s mounting screws are snug, check that the wire coming out of the keypad isn’t obviously cut or chewed, and try replacing the keypad’s 9-volt battery if your model is one of the older wireless ones that has one. If the keypad still doesn’t respond after those checks, call us.
What we’d caution against: opening the operator housing and probing wires with a multimeter if you’re not familiar with low-voltage diagnostics. The control board inside a Mighty Mule operator takes 12 to 24 volts in most cases, and while that’s not a shock hazard, shorting the wrong two terminals can fry the board, which turns a $200 keypad repair into a $500 control board job. Same goes for running new wire through conduit if you’re not comfortable with it. We’re glad to handle the diagnosis and the repair, and you’ll know the price before we begin. Call (940) 531-3336 and tell us what it’s doing wrong. We’ll tell you what it costs to fix it, in writing, before we start.
FAQs
In San Antonio’s heat and sun exposure, expect 5 to 7 years from a Mighty Mule keypad and 4 to 6 years from an intercom board before failure is likely. Keypads mounted on west-facing gates or in full afternoon sun tend to fail on the shorter end because the plastic housing and internal seals degrade faster with UV exposure. We see this consistently across Stone Oak and other areas with minimal tree cover. If yours is past that age and acting up, replacement is usually more cost-effective than repair. Call (940) 531-3336 and we’ll confirm the condition before you commit to anything.
Sometimes, yes. If the issue is a loose terminal, corroded wire connection, or a failed speaker, we repair it on the spot. If the keypad’s circuit board itself or the intercom module has failed, replacement is the better call; repairing a board takes longer and often fails again within a year, which is why we don’t quote board-level repairs. We’ll show you the failed part and explain exactly what we’re recommending before you approve the work. Call (940) 531-3336 for a straight answer on your specific unit.
Most keypad or intercom replacements take 45 to 90 minutes from the time we park the truck to the time we hand you the new PIN and watch you test it at the gate. If we’re running new wire from the keypad back to the operator because the old wire is damaged, add another 30 to 45 minutes. We carry Mighty Mule-compatible keypads, intercom boards, and housings on the truck, so in most cases the repair happens in one visit. Call (940) 531-3336 and we’ll give you a time window and a firm price before we come out.
Yes. We carry the standard wired Mighty Mule keypads, the MM/FM series intercom boards, replacement keypad housings, and the common RB/MK series parts on our San Antonio trucks. We also carry LiftMaster, Ghost Controls, and DoorKing keypads. If you have an uncommon Mighty Mule setup, we’ll confirm the part number over the phone and have it in hand before your appointment. Call (940) 531-3336 and we’ll check stock while you’re on the line.
