If your BFT gate is sagging, dragging, or making a grinding sound when it moves, the hinge or roller is almost always the culprit. In San Antonio, a BFT hinge and roller replacement typically costs $240 – $480 installed depending on gate size, weight, and how many components need swapping. We stock common BFT-compatible hinges and rollers on our trucks, so most San Antonio repairs are done in a single visit, same day.

Most owners don’t notice a hinge or roller failing until the gate starts scraping the driveway or won’t close all the way. The gate works fine one week, then it’s off-kilter the next. What actually happened is the roller lost its bearing surface, or the hinge pin wallowed out over thousands of open-and-close cycles in San Antonio heat and humidity. It’s not dramatic. It’s just metal wearing against metal until something gives.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
This repair covers nearly every BFT swing gate and sliding gate sold in the San Antonio market over the last fifteen years, including the BFT Deimos, Kustos, and Sub series, plus older BFT models you’ll still see on homes in Alamo Heights, Stone Oak, and Dominion. If your gate has a BFT operator mounted on it, the hinge and roller components are almost always a separate commodity part that we can match by measurement, not just by model number.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha that matters: BFT operators don’t dictate which hinge or roller your gate uses. The gate fabricator does. So we identify the right part by measuring the roller diameter, axle size, and the hinge leaf dimensions, then cross-reference against what’s actually on the gate. In some cases we can use a genuine BFT-sourced component, but more often a quality American-made aftermarket hinge or roller with the same load rating actually outlasts the original. We’ll tell you which makes sense for your gate before any money changes hands.

Signs Your BFT Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing
- The gate sags at the latch end. This means the hinge pin or hinge leaf has worn enough to drop the gate’s free edge. If you can lift the latch end more than a quarter inch and feel play, the hinge is done. The operator keeps working but it’s pushing a gate that’s out of alignment, which wears the motor faster.
- You hear a grinding or squealing when the gate moves. That’s the roller bearing running dry or the roller wheel wearing flat on one side. In San Antonio’s humidity and occasional freeze cycles, cheap sealed bearings give out faster than the rest of the gate. Once the wheel stops rolling and starts skidding, it carves a groove into the track or the concrete.
- The gate hesitates or shudders mid-travel. A flat-spotted roller causes that stutter. The BFT operator is trying to maintain steady speed, but the mechanical resistance keeps changing. That’s the operator compensating for a part it shouldn’t have to fight.
- You see rust trails or metal dust near the hinge or roller. That’s the giveaway. Worn metal leaves residue. If you see reddish dust below a hinge pin, the pin and bushing are grinding themselves down. It will only get looser.
- The gate opened fine for years and now bounces off the stop or misses the close limit. Worn hinges and rollers change the geometry of the gate just enough to confuse the BFT limit settings. You can adjust limits all day, but if the mechanical parts are sloppy, the adjustment won’t hold.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard single swing gate in San Antonio, expect a complete hinge and roller replacement to run $240 – $320. A heavier or ornamental steel gate with cast iron or custom hinges lands in the $340 – $480 range. If the gate is a sliding style, roller replacement usually sits at $220 – $380 depending on whether we replace the guide rollers, the main load rollers, or both.
That installed price includes the parts, the labor, realigning the gate so the BFT operator isn’t fighting the load, and lubricating every wear point before we leave. You get a written price before we touch anything. No line items appear after the fact. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise, so if the hinge or roller fails inside a year, the return visit is free. Cole Rafferty signs off on every quote, and if the old roller came out in pieces, you’ll see a photo of it before it goes in the scrap bin.
DIY or Call Us?
You can check for wear safely: lift the latch end of the gate with the operator disengaged and feel for play, look for metal dust, and listen for grinding while someone runs the gate. That’s diagnosis, and it’s useful to know what you’re looking at. But this is a part swap I’d leave to someone with the right stand and the right pins, because a sagging gate carries stored energy. When a hinge lets go under load, a few hundred pounds of steel moves faster than you expect. We’ve seen BFT operators run a gate right off a failed hinge in San Antonio more than once.
We use blocking stands and support the gate before removing any hinge or roller. That’s not optional. If you’re not set up to do that safely, call us at (940) 531-3336 and we’ll have a tech out with the right parts and a written price.
FAQs
Seven to ten years is typical in San Antonio, but gates that are out of alignment or never lubricated can wear through a roller in three. The climate here is hard on seals and bearings: heat dries out grease, humidity invites rust, and the occasional hard freeze makes stiff parts fail sooner. If you’ve gotten a decade out of your original hinges, you did well.
Almost never, not in a way that holds up. You can pack a worn roller bearing with grease and get another season, but the flat spot on the wheel is there. A hinge pin can be replaced if the leaves are still tight, but once the leaf itself is egged out, the hinge is scrap. We’ll tell you if yours is salvageable, but most aren’t once they’re noisy. Call (940) 531-3336 for an honest read on what you’ve got.
Most single-gate jobs run 90 minutes to two hours, including realigning and rechecking the BFT operator limits. A heavy custom gate or a sliding gate with multiple rollers can run three hours. We schedule San Antonio appointments with enough time to do it once, not rush it.
We stock the most common roller diameters, axle sizes, and hinge configurations for BFT swing and slide gates on our trucks, plus quality aftermarket equivalents with the same or better load ratings. If your gate needs an unusual size, we source it same week from our San Antonio suppliers. Either way, the price is written down before we start.
Tell me what it’s doing wrong, I’ll tell you what it costs to fix it, in writing, before we start. Call Warden Gate Repair San Antonio at (940) 531-3336 for a free estimate on BFT hinge and roller replacement. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls operators, but if you’ve got a BFT gate that’s dragging or grinding, that’s the call to make today. Live person, 24/7.
