BFT Access Control Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

BFT access control installation in San Antonio typically runs $450 – $1,150 installed, depending on whether you need a simple keypad swap or a full card reader, intercom, and wiring job. We stock BFT-compatible keypads, card readers, intercom modules, and control boards on our trucks, and we can usually complete a straightforward access control swap the same day we diagnose it. The most common way San Antonio owners find out their BFT access control has failed is simple: the keypad stops accepting the code, or the card reader stops reading the fob that worked fine yesterday.

Here’s the frustrating part. BFT makes solid operators, but their access control peripherals fail in patterns we see again and again across San Antonio. Keypads wear out from weather and UV. Card reader antennas corrode. Control board relays stop clicking. The good news is that none of this is mysterious to us. We open BFT panels every week, and we arrive with the right parts already in the truck.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

Before you order anything online, let’s make sure we’re talking about the same part. BFT access control systems fall into a few distinct series lines, and the connectors are not universal. We commonly service the BFT Thalia, Rigel, Deimos, and Aries control units here in San Antonio, plus their companion peripherals: the MITTO keypads, the RIGEL and CLONIX receivers, and the BFT card readers that pair with them. If your unit is older, you might have a BFT LEO or a clamshell-style keypad whose screws are rusted into the housing.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips up San Antonio owners every week. BFT uses a rolling-code system that is not interchangeable across generations. A keypad from a Thalia system will not simply drop into a Rigel panel without reprogramming, and some older BFT readers operate on a different frequency than the newer CLONIX series. That’s why we always read the model label on the access control board itself before we quote anything. The label is usually on the side of the control enclosure, and it has the exact model and a serial number. Take a photo of it and text it to us if you want. Cole Rafferty does that with his own crew all the time: a photo of the label saves a second trip.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for BFT specifically: BFT’s own parts are well made, but they are not the only option. There are quality aftermarket keypads and readers that wire into BFT panels cleanly, and in some cases they outlast the original. We carry both, and we will give you the honest trade-off in writing before we start. We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with BFT, which means we get to recommend the part that is actually right for your gate, not the one a corporate rep needs to move this quarter.

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • The keypad accepts the code but nothing happens. The keypad is talking, but the relay on the BFT control board is either stuck or dead. This is usually a board relay, not a keypad problem, and it means the access control installation has a control-side failure, not a keypad failure.
  • The keypad lights up but won’t register button presses. The membrane or tactile switches under the buttons have worn out. San Antonio sun and humidity are hard on these. This is the most common access control failure we see on BFT systems, especially on gates that face west with no shade.
  • The card reader flashes but won’t read any fob. The antenna inside the reader has corroded or the reader has lost its programming to the fobs. We’ve seen this happen after power surges, which are common in San Antonio during storm season.
  • The intercom audio is static-filled or one-way. Moisture has gotten into the outdoor station, or the wiring between the house and the gate has degraded. This is more common on older BFT installs where the phone line or Cat-5 was not rated for outdoor burial.
  • The system works sometimes, then stops, then works again. This intermittent behavior in a BFT access control installation almost always points to a loose wiring connection or a failing power supply. It will get worse. It never gets better on its own.

If any of these sound familiar, the access control part itself may or may not be the culprit. That’s the thing. A keypad that won’t respond can be a dead keypad, a dead board, or a wiring fault. We test before we quote, and our testing is included in the service call.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

So what should a San Antonio homeowner budget for a BFT access control installation? Based on what we charge and what we quote across the city, here is the range:

  • Basic keypad or card reader replacement: $450 – $650 installed. Includes the new part, removal of the old one, wiring cleanup, programming, and testing at the gate.
  • Keypad plus control board relay repair: $650 – $850. The extra cost is the board work. Sometimes the board can be repaired; sometimes it needs a replacement board. We will show you the difference before we proceed.
  • Full access control system upgrade (keypad, reader, intercom, and board): $850 – $1,150. This is for older BFT systems where the parts are failing together, or where the existing wiring is too degraded to reuse.

The range depends on access. A gate with a clean, accessible control box and a short wire run is on the lower end. A gate where the conduit is buried under a driveway or the old wiring is crumbling will push it higher. Every quote we give in San Antonio is written and agreed before any work starts. No surprise line items. No vague “labor and materials” padding. The written price is the price. And every access control installation we do carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within a year, the return visit is free.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things you can safely check before you call, and we’ll tell you what they are. Check that the keypad is getting power: most BFT units have a small LED that should be lit. Check that the breaker for the gate operator hasn’t tripped. Check that no wires are dangling loose at the keypad or the control box. That’s about it, and honestly, most San Antonio owners we meet have already done these three things by the time they call us.

Here’s where DIY goes wrong on these systems. The inside of a BFT control box has live 120-volt connections and low-voltage control terminals. If you short the wrong two terminals, you will kill the board, and now a $450 keypad swap becomes an $850 board replacement. We’ve also seen homeowners buy a keypad online that was not compatible with their BFT series, wire it in, and fry the new keypad and the old board in one afternoon. It’s not worth it. If you want to talk it through, call us at (940) 531-3336. Tell me what it’s doing wrong, and we’ll tell you what it costs to fix it, in writing, before we start.

We’re also not just a BFT house. We stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, Ghost Controls, and six other major gate and opener brands, because San Antonio gates don’t all speak the same language. If you have an access control failure and don’t know what brand is in the box, we’ll identify it on the first visit.

FAQs

Get the Part Matched, Priced, and Installed

If your BFT access control installation is failing, you don’t need a catalog of parts. You need the right part matched to your exact model, a written price before work starts, and a technician whose name and face you know before you open the door. That’s what we do. Call (940) 531-3336 and we’ll answer live, day or night. We’ll schedule the visit, send you the name and photo of the technician coming out, and give you a written quote before a single wire is touched. No voicemail tag. No chatbot menus. Just a real person on the other end of the line in San Antonio.
